10 Ways to increase comments on your blog

1. Always interact with the comments left on your blog to ensure a flow of discussion. If someone leaves a compliment on a post be nice and thank them. If a reader suggests something about your post or leaves a meaningful comment, reply to their comment to show that you are always up for discussion.

2. Install the Subscribe to commentsplug-in. When commentators leave a message on your site they will be notified via e-mail about any new comments that have been left if they subscribed to it. Don’t piss off your visitors by leaving the subscribe box automatically checked. They will be flooded with e-mails which notify them of other comments being left on that post.

3. Make it easy to comment on your blog. Don’t have any stupid complicated spam checking devices. Asking for the sum of 2 numbers is fine (assuming your readers can count). Sometimes bloging platforms have annoying windows that pop up so you can leave a comment.

4. Do not force your readers to login and register before leaving a comment on your blog. This will greatly reduce the number of comments left on your blog, probably by around 50%.

5. If someone has taken the time to leave a comment on your blog take the time to return the favor and at least visit their site. It’s even better to visit their site and leave a comment on their blog to show your appreciation. Remember to say something meaningful.

6. Show top commentators on your blog. This greatly encourage your readers to comment. If they make the top commentators list they will get some link love and will encourage them to visit more often so they can retain their top commentators stop for extra traffic and some link love. You can get the top commentators plugin here.

7. Ask questions in your post. Include specific questions near the end of the post. Your readers will be prompted to voice their opinion knowing that other readers will want to leave their opinion as well.

8. Resist the urge to complete your post too much. I know this sounds weird but if you cover every possible aspect of the topic you just talked about your readers will have nothing to say. Leave some spots open for conversation and voice your own opinion. It doesn’t matter if your readers totally disagree with you or agree with you, either way you will get more comments.

9. Observe!Sometime bloggers find trends and patterns with the comments left on their blogs. If you continually watch to see which posts attract the most comments you will know which writing style is most effective to encourage discussion on your blog and you can leverage your writing style to increase comments and site interaction!

10. Be controversial! There is no better way to get more comments on your blog than being controversial. State your opinion and your side of the story. Make sure your readers know what you are trying to say and don’t be afraid to have an opinion different than that of the majority. Your readers will let you know if they disagree with you.

I hope this list will help increase your comments left on your blog. If you have any other techniques or ideas please feel free to share them with us all ;) .

Point #4: well said! There’s been times I’ve wanted to comment on something only to find I need to use a Google login or something! Come on, I just want to comment, not jump through hoops to do so :)

Nicely written post. I think that the biggest thing is that visitors feel welcome. Your #4 is spot on. Making visitors register before they can comment should be avoided if possible.

You saved my blog when I started it ;). On my blog moderation was enabled :/. And after disabling it, more and more people are commenting my posts.

Completely agree with #2 And #4 Shaun…..I very much dislike when the subscribe to comments box is checked by default (and I miss it and don’t uncheck it!), as well as having to log in. I honestly think that the folks on blogger (or blogspot?) don’t get as many comments because some of those blogs require a login, and in the end, don’t even display your name and url…instead they display your “account” name.

It just takes too much time to go through all of that, the same for having to sign up for a forum in order to post comments. If you’re a busy blogger, you just don’t have the time. ;)

I could never work out why people make it so hard for others to comment. There have been many times when I wanted to, but couldn’t because I wasn’t a registered member of something (even some of those social network blog types are guilty) and then if you look for contact details they aren’t available either.

So, I took to commenting on my own blogs and linking back to the blog owner - they soon pick up on that!

Great post Shaun! I especially like #8. That’s a tough one to practice. It kind of goes against your instincts, but it really makes people feel like participating more.

Hey Shaun, I just notice that you have the “reply to comment” feature on your comment system.

Which plugin are you using? I tried to get mine to work on my blog, but it’s not working! :-(

I am using Brian’s Threaded Comment and I am guessing you’re too.

Great post - this indeed can be one of the biggest challenges, I have had many readers for more than 2-years, yet so few comment. I’ll try some of the suggestions you mention.
