A Funny StumbleUpon Experience
Aug. 29th, 2007 by ShaunThis post should actually be called “The Power Of StumbleUpon”, but anyways the other day I came across this funny joke from Malewail.com. The joke went something like this:
The Good The Bad The Ugly
1. Good: Your wife is pregnant.
Bad: It’s triplets.
Ugly: You had a vasectomy five years ago.2. Good: Your wife’s not talking to you
Bad: She wants a divorce.
Ugly: She’s a lawyer3. Good: Your son is finally maturing
Bad: He’s involved with the woman next door
Ugly: So are you4. Good: Your son studies a lot in his room
Bad: You find several porn movies hidden there
Ugly: You’re in them5. Good: Your hubby and you agree, no more kids
Bad: You can’t find your birth control pills
Ugly: Your daughter borrowed them6. Good: Your husband understands fashion
Bad: He’s a cross-dresser
Ugly: He looks better than you7. Good: You give the “birds and bees:” talk to your daughter
Bad: She keeps interrupting
Ugly: With corrections8. Good: The postman’s early
Bad: He’s wearing fatigues and carrying a shotgun
Ugly: You gave him nothing for Christmas9. Good: Your son is dating someone new
Bad: It’s another man
Ugly: He’s your best friend10. Good: Your daughter got a new job
Bad: As a hooker
Ugly: Your coworkers are her best clients
Way ugly: She makes more money than you do.
Prety funny eh? It actually made me laugh when I was finished reading it. So I thought it deserved a nice little Thumbs Up from my StumbleUpon tool bar. This particular post had 0 comments before I saw it and it was published over 5 days ago. You can check out my comment here (notice how I was the first person to leave comment after the post has already been published for 5 days):
The author of the blog left me a message on MyBlogLog the very next day saying: “thanks for the Stumble it brought me a lot of traffic”. So I went over to the blog and noticed there was over 63 comments…very weird considering there were 0 comments the day before and now there was 63. I guess we’ll never know exactly how much traffic StumbleUpon brought in but you can notice a massive jump in their Alexa Rank just after one day, look at the graph below:
It’s hard to tell from the graph but you can see a very small level of traffic and notice how the blue line shoots up exponentially, (probably all from the StumbleUpon traffic that post generated). The Alexa Rank for Malewail.com is 2,648,493. Malewail.com’s traffic rank for August 27th was 28,830. Much higher than 2,648,493, and I’m guessing the majority of this traffic came from StumbleUpon.
Normal Alexa Rank:
Alexa Rank After Post Submitted To StumbleUpon:
You can clearly see the massive traffic this post brought in just due to the fact that Malewail.com had 63 comments in one day and their Alexa rank jumped through the roof overnight. StumbleUpon can bring you huge traffic over a short period of time just like Digg as long as you write worthy and unique content. High five to Malewail, keep up the good work

Interesting post, and good joke. I still have no idea how SU works and why the toolbar is not working for me, but I do know that it works. The day you stumbled one of my articles my traffic had a nice boost. If you know anything about SU that would be useful, please post about it, cause I’m very curious.
Thanks
Simon

According to the TOS you are not supposed to stumble your own stuff.
August 29th, 2007 at 12:12 pm
Yeah I figured that out today, thanks anyway.
August 29th, 2007 at 12:41 pm
simon I’ll be publishing a post all about stumbleupon tomorrow. stay tuned for it

Funny jokes! I’ve found SU useful (though I should spend more time on it to maximize the advantages).
August 29th, 2007 at 12:38 pm

August 29th, 2007 at 1:05 pm

August 29th, 2007 at 6:51 pm
You know Shaun, I’ve had one good Stumble experience and definitely could see the huge jump in traffic. Now only if it had translated into $$. (#)
August 30th, 2007 at 9:17 pm
That Jokes hilarious, and the stumble effect is amazing it not only gives you a spike but also consistent traffic for quite some time after.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:25 pm
Someone very generous (bless that guy :p) stumbled a post from my blog, and within two hours I got more than 35,000+ hits on that single post
And this continued for 3 days. People kept stumbling and the traffic I was getting was endless
August 30th, 2007 at 11:29 pm
Shaun,
I will write a follow up post to your shortly, I waiting for a week’s worth of traffic. It’s pushing the 50,000 visitor mark. And once again thanks for the write up about my post.

@haris: thats amzing! 35,000 visitors is a lot
August 31st, 2007 at 4:12 pm
Just a little note about SU. Reviews works so much better than a simple thumbs up.
That is my experience
August 31st, 2007 at 4:21 pm
I think thats true to, it’s a combination of thumbs up and reviews. thanks for the tip
