Back To School

Back To School

Well my summer holidays are pretty much over, I have to go back to school on September 5th so I can continue my journey to getting my MBA over at the University of Alberta. Back to school means no summer job which means no more income. We all know that blogging is a lot of work and requires a large time investment if you want to run a successful blog. Going to school full time requires at least 5 hours of classes a day and 2-3 hours of studying per day. That’s basically a full time job. We all know that going to university is expensive as hell and the amount of debt you can rack up is enormous.

Over the course of summer and all of my working experience I have basically saved up enough money to pay for my own tuition, including books, bus fair, and the normal school fees. I haven’t saved up any spending money for the course of the year so if I want to have a life during school and not be a hermit I need some money so I can have a good time during school. That would mean getting a part time job during school so I can have some extra spending money. I don’t think I would be able to juggle school, part time job, and blogging so I have to drop one of the 3 options…I think I would prefer to drop the job and continue Shaunlow.com. I still need to have some cash in my pocket during school so I will have to look towards blogging as my only source of income.

How will I make money bloggging?

No I am not going to turn this blog into another “Make Money Online” blog like the other million of them out there, but I will be taking some ideas from the famous John Chow and learn on how to make some extra money with this blog.

-I will be participating in some sponsored reviews from Pay Per Post. I know sponsored reviews SUCK and they are boring as hell to read but in order to keep this site alive I will have to be doing a few reviews if I want to survive university. I personally NEVER read sponsored reviews because I have never once found anything worth while reading in them. If I don’t read sponsored reviews I most definitely don’t expect my own readers to read them as well. Just to let you know my regular posting schedule will not change at all, (I will still publish around one normal article per day), and maybe 2 reviews per week. I will try my best to keep the reviews relevant to the topic of this blog so I hope you guys can manage a few sponsored reviews per week!

-Also I will be implementing some affiliate programs on this site. I know many bloggers make some really good cash selling affiliate deals for other companies. I will talk more about affiliate programs in a later post.

-I’ll also toss up Google Adsense back on this blog, I had it on before and made $20-$30 bucks a month so this is another good source of easy income.

School, my personal life and blogging is a lot of work. Do any of you guys go to school and blog at the same time? If so, how do you manage to make money and go to school at the same time? Any suggestions on time management and making money would be much appreciated!!!

Hey Shaun,
check cj.com or other affiliate network and add some related affiliate programs to your blog. I am sure they will work with you.

Sponsored Reviews are the best way to lose most of your readers, stay clear of them. You’ll be happy you did.

@ loren: i agree to some degree, i have heard some bad things about writing sponsored reviews and at the same time I’ve seen many successful blogs participate with PPP. Thanks for the heads up though I’m still deciding if i want to do them or not.

@preblogging: haha i’ve read a lot of them a while ago until i realized they weren’t to helpful for me. Thats just my opinion though. You made a good pont lol.

@David: Yeh i have some serious time managment to do here. Hopefully I can manage but school is obviously # 1 priority for me.

I’m interested to see how you handle blogging and school at the same time. I want to head back to school soon but have a hard enough time as it is updating my blog with just my day job, much less school plus homework!

I will never go back to school! It’s over for me.

I did well, but never liked school too much. I do like education and knowledge, but rather not be in school for certain reasons.

I feel much better at home now!

Good luck with balancing school and managing the site. It can be a daunting task, but I’m sure you’ll be able to pull it off and possibly be able to blow off steam, if and when the “going gets tough”. I definitely have a lot of plates, taking care of my daughter (who is turning one in two weeks!) and managing 4 sites. It can be a lot of work….but it’s fun. Anything fun, is worth doing!

It is a tough job to handle school and blogging at the same time . I am also in college but i make it a point to spend around 2hrs on blogging everyday . Previously when i used to have around 7-8 hrs of classes each day , i couldnt update my blog from time to time but things are better now . Just try to devote some time to blogging each day and things will be fine .

I didn’t know you in school? What are you going to school for? If you are motivated to stay in school, stick through it thats all I have to say about that :).

Right now I blog at night mostly because I have 2 little ones running around until about 8-9 at night and than I try to get my post up by 11 so I have a few minutes to breath and than start the day over again. I can sneak on during the day to read and maybe comment. If you have a laptop it might make blogging easier if you are always on the go and don’t forget your notebook for blogging offline, its helped me a tun.

I’m glad you’ll be trying to keep up with your blog!

I was wondering what day you started back…

And do you know I didn’t realize that you were in Edmonton until I read your stumble profile the other day…

Anyway, I’m glad to see you’re keeping the blog. You’ve put ALOT of work into this site, it’s just starting to do well for you.

Keep it up, and I’m sure you’ll find a way to manage everything…

BTW - 8 hours sleep?!? Try 3-5 on any day of the week … Coffee, lot’s of coffee. :)

Yeah, I’m south of Calgary… small world.

3-5 hours is normal for me. I have a really sick child, so I’m up at night with him and then have to be able to manage and function during the day… 6 hours on a weekend is heaven.

When in school, don’t like school. When out of school, wish was in school.

At least that was how I felt. ;)

Btw, where are you hiding your Adsense? Or you’ve decided not to put it back up afterall?

September 12th, 2007 at 10:32 pm

I totaly agree, i took some time off school and I hated working. now that im in school i miss making money :( . I took adsense off for a bit i was only making like 30-40 a month so i didn’t think it was even worth it for now. I might put it back up later when i get more traffic for now i just want to have a nice clean blog ad free :)

$30/mth -> $360/yr

Any amount is still money, unless there’s something really outperforming it which you can use the space better. So why not? :)

If you mix it well with your layout, I don’t think it will intrude too much on readers.
