How to make a great first impression with your blog

Because this is an infant blog I found it appropriate to make this post. The best way to increase traffic to your site is to get links back from other blogs or sites. For any new blogs the majority of your visitors will have no idea of who you are or what your intensions with your blog are; therefore you must make your first impression and make sure it’s a  good one  .  We all know the saying that goes: “You only get one first imrpression”, and as a blogger you need to capture each new visitors attention with the goal of keeping that reader as a long term returning visitor. My beleife is that one returning visitor is worth more than 1000 non returning visitors. Here are a few tips which will help you make that great first impression with your blog:

  •  -Make a honest and descriptive about me page. I think that all blogs should have a long, detailed page that talks about the writer of the blog. This page should include all of the writers interests and hobbies, all of the writers accomplishments (and failures) and any other sites that the blogger operates. Your readers will feel more comfortable knowing that the information comes from a reputable author who is not afraid of his identity. People relate to people, and once your readers have read your about page, a connection with you and your readers has now been created which will lead to an increased return visitor rate.
  •  -Be yourself and speak your mind. A blog is your personal writing place where you place your thoughts and opions on a topic. There are literally millions of blogs and the one thing that separates your blog from the rest is unique content. If your blog is identical to any other blog out there then you will loose credibility and your reader base. Write on a topic you turely love and make sure that you have a good understanding of the niche that you are covering. Always be open, upfront, and honest with your readers and if you have an opinion different from the rest of the crowd do not be afraid to voice your opinion.
  •  -Blog usablitly. A blog must have some form of style. Most visitors are instantly tunred off by any tacky site design or extreme colors. I know I don’t stay on any website too long if the navigation and layout are bad. A blog must be unique and different than all other weblogs on the net. I recommend reading Jakob Nielsen’s weblog usability article  for more information on this topic.
  • -Contact page. It must be easy for your readers to contact you. The contact page should only be a click away to find your e-mail address or a contact forum. This helps create a personal connection between you and your readers and this also shows that the person maintaining the blog cares for his or her readers.

Hopefully this will help increase visitor return rate. If you have any suggestions please feel free to leave them as comments below!
