The Art of Guest-Blogging

This post is guest blogged by Glenn Allsopp from Clickalite, a blog about internet business.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a sucker for guest blogging. By that I mean I feel there are so many benefits I can’t believe more people aren’t getting into it. What better way to tap into your niche then writing on a blog with your ideal readers?

I havn’t done nearly enough guest blogging over the last 18 months but there are some reasons for that; no.1 being that bloggers never seem to make it clear that they actually want someone to share their voice with the audience. Today I’m going to look at how you can be the best Guest Blogger that you can be and hopefully good enough so that you get asked to write some more.

Be relevant -If a fashion blogger is offering a space for you to go and write on their site, don’t take up the opportunity and attempt to interest their readers with a piece on Nazi Germany. The reason blogs offer guest blogging ‘gigs’ could be for them to take a day off but also to give their readers a new voice to hear and a new opinion to bear in mind.

Improve Lives - I don’t mean that you have to be superman but you do have to try and make it so that if someone has missed your post then they are missing out on improving their life. There are some blogs I can’t unsubscribe from just incase I miss anything and you want your post to be unmissable. Don’t write about your own success and leave it at that, apply words so that the readers can get something out of your content for their own gain.

Give it Your All - Many people don’t like the thought of guest blogging as its probably the type of content that they could post on their own website. If you are going to guest blog and don’t want to give up your gems then don’t blog at all. I could have easily applied this post to my blog but really want to give something back to the site owner for giving me the opportunity to show what I’m made of. Don’t forget its a priviledge to be writing and write as well as if you would on your own blog if not more-so.

Say Something New - Before I started writing this post I went over the blogging archives to make sure that a similar post hadn’t been written and fortunately it hadn’t. If a topic has already been covered then you can’t give the readers the best experience from your post. If you want to write about something that has already been covered try to put a unique angle on it or just pick something else.

Guest blogging can be a risk. If you are writing on a new site you never know how long its going to be up and if any ‘exposure’ you get from the site is worth it. We all have to take risks in life and in my book this is one of the smallest you can take. Get out there and be relevant, improve lives, give it your all whilst making sure you say something new!
